What training do I need to do to be a surf instructor?

Let’s Go Surfing instructors are very fit and highly qualified and have undergone some pretty rigorous training. To become a coach you need to do a number of courses which will cost around $700 (approximately) this investment is paid to Surfing NSW, 1st Aid providers etc and is tax deductible. Completing these courses does not guarantee you a position at Let’s Go surfing but they are a mandatory requirement for all our coaches. Generally speaking, most people who are able to satisfy the requirements of this training do get work as a surf coach.

All our surf coaches must complete the following:

  • A physical assessment held at the beach (demonstrating to us you are able to swim, have a good level of fitness, and can surf).
  • A Surfing Australia Foundation Surf Coach Award (online course) or International Surfing Association (ISA) Level 1 Surf Coaching course. If you have the ISA award you need to do a bridging course to join Surfing Australia.
  • Ocean rescue Award (OSSCA via APOLA/or bronze medallion through a surf lifesaving club) NB: We can assist you attain the APOLA OSSCA award.
  • Working with Children, Senior First Aid and CPR Course .
  • 20 voluntary practical hours at a registered surf school. This is a requirement of the Level 1 Surf Coaching Course and you do this with us.

Do I have to complete all of this training before I apply for a job?

No. If we think you’ve got what it takes we will invite you to start some of your training at Let’s Go Surfing under our mentor programme – once you’ve completed our application form and physical assessment and also booked in for your Foundation Surf Coach Award with Surfing NSW.

Does doing the required training guarantee me a job?

No. Completing these courses does not guarantee you a position at Let’s Go surfing but they are a mandatory requirement for all our coaches. Generally speaking, most people who are able to satisfy the requirements of this training do get work as a surf coach.

What if I have other or overseas qualifications?

We love international coaches. If you have completed the ISA award you will need to do a bridging course with Surfing NSW to be accredited to teach with us. We can assist with this. You will also need to do the Ocean rescue, 1st Aid and Working with Children Check in Australia.  If you have not completed the ISA award you will be required to complete the Foundation Surf Coach Award to gain your coaching card to work with us. All our coaches must be certified by Surfing Australia..

Where can I get more information about these training courses?

Contact us at  jobs@letsgosurfing.com.au and we can email you links and information to all the courses required We can also answer any other questions you may have.

I want to work in customer service but I’m not a great surfer.

That’s cool. We’d still like to hear from you. Typically our customer service staff love the beach but that doesn’t mean you have to know how to carve up the waves. We’re more interested in people who can simultaneously make our customers feel welcome, take bookings, juggle phone calls, help our instructors get classes underway and keep smiling!

This all sounds good. What do I do next?

If you’re confident you fit our criteria, email your resume and contact us! We look forward to hearing from you.
