The best thing about working at a surf school is getting to be at the beach every day, while getting to see people’s surfing or ocean journeys. Seeing how the ocean helps people is amazing.

Start with a bigger board than you initially think.

Sharing in the surf stoke! We get to experience surfing for the first time again through our students eyes.

I was first introduced to surfing through nippers. The nipper coaches used to yell at me to stop standing on the boards during races! Mum and Dad bought me a board shortly after.

The office! everyday I get to go to the beach and talk to people about my passion.

Make sure you speak to the softboard specialists (us) before buying a new board and always try before you buy!

What got you hooked on surfing?

I love surfing because every time you jump in the water you’re going to have a different experience. Whether the waves are big or small, messy or clean, my goal is to always enjoy just spending time in the ocean.

Surf coaching brings me happiness and I get excited when people push themselves out of their comfort zones and surprise themselves with what they can achieve

A tip I would recommend to new surfers is going in with an achievable goal of just catching one good wave, staying positive or having fun. It means you can always get out of the water feeling satisfied.

Standing up on my first wave got me hooked straight away.

Watching people improve and the stoke they get from standing up for the first time.

North Corner is a sacred place — it’s the best wave in the world. From the first time I paddled out, I couldn’t leave.

Spending time in the water every day and getting paid for it. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Stick at it. Don’t stop surfing — the more time you spend out there, the more it all starts to click.

The first wave I caught when Iwas young. From there it was nonstop for me. Just being able to be out in the water, read the ocean and move with it.

Watching people enjoy the same thing I do. It’s incredibly rewarding watching people grow not just as surfers but also their love for the sport. It brings people together in a magical way.

Everyone progresses differently so never beat yourself down. You’re already one step ahead by getting out there. Surfing will teach you patience with the waves, with progress and with yourself. Just have fun!

Seeing my students achieve things they thought was not possible. Nothing better than seeing the smile on my students face after standing up for the first time.

The feeling of being free in the water, to be able to exercise while being connected to the ocean made me fall in love instantly.

Always look forward. Where you look is where you are going to go. I like to spot the blue building at north corner as it helps with balance.

When people finish their waves, they turn around to look at me to see if I saw them on the waves and to share this amazing moment with them is really special.

Watching a movie called Blue Crush with my sister, initially sewed the seed in my love for surfing. On the Isle of Wight, where I’m from, we’d get chilly winter swells that a group of friends and I would chase

What’s the best thing about working at a surf school?

Seeing progression, sometimes only in a single hour. A lot of the time from women on waves or six week course students that are nervous to surf at the start of their course, to building confidence enough that I see them out the back on my solo surfs!

Look where you’re going! It’s natural to look at your feet when you start surfing but fight against the urge.

I got hooked on surfing at around the age of 12. I’d been doing it for a couple of years already at this point, and it was around this age when a couple of my mates got into it.

What’s the best thing about working at a surf school?

I love seeing groms improve over several school terms. They go from a water shy kid on a 7’6″ board to a confident little surfer riding a 6’6″ on a green wave. Awesome to see!

What’s one tip you always give new surfers?

Be patient with yourself. It’s not the easiest sport to get the hang of, but giving yourself plenty of time in the water at your own pace will have you up and riding before you know it.

Once I stood up on my first wave, I was hooked. What really kept me in it was the travel and the good times with mates. Surfing’s taken me to some amazing places and introduced me to some of my closest friends.

Seeing someone stand up for the first time! That moment of surprise and excitement on their face never gets old. It’s awesome being part of someone’s first surf memory.

Don’t take it too seriously, just have fun with it. Everyone wipes out & everyone starts somewhere. The more you enjoy it, the better you’ll get.
